A grizzly bear on Francs Peak.
At over 13,150-feet high, Francs Peak, located on the border of Wyoming’s Washakie Wilderness and the Shoshone National Forest, is the highest point in the Absaroka Mountains, which stretch from north central part of the state into south central Montana.

Those who climb Francs Peak, which is a relatively easy task normally achieved in less than a day, are rewarded with incomparable vistas of some of the most rugged and beautiful portions of 2 states.

Wyoming wildlife observation is especially rewarding here. Animals native to and still present in the Wyoming mountains thrive on Francs Peak. Species visitors may see include mule and white-tailed deer, black and grizzly bears, grey wolves, moose, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, cougar, bobcats, wolverine, and marten.

Camping, hunting, hiking and horse-back riding are the main activities enjoyed in the vicinity of Francs Peak. The Wyoming fishing opportunities aren’t spectacular, but some streams yield decent-sized trout.
