Cheyenne is Wyoming’s largest city as well as it’s
state capital, as evidenced by the stately and impressive State Capital
building, which would look right home on the Thames. The city is justifiably
proud of its Wild West roots, and much of the town history can be soaked
up on a ride through its historic district in a horse-drawn carriage.
The Nelson Museum of the West houses a cool private collection of frontier
artifacts and more than its share of stuffed animal heads. The Frontier
Days Wild West Museum at I-25 of exit 12 illuminates early Cheyenne
culture and has a number of authentic wagons.
Outdoor adventure in the Cheyenne area is just a day trip away. The
Terry Bison Ranch gives city slickers and tenderfeet the chance to cowboy
up for a while with horse rides by the bison herds and cookouts when
the triangle sings. Curt Gowdy State Park isn’t far away, where
fishing, boating and hiking awaits the eager visitor. The Medicine Bow
National Forest sees Curt Gowdy State Park’s hiking and fishing
and raises it camping and skiing at the Snowy Range Ski Area. Vedauwoo
Recreational area is beloved of the hike, bike and picnic crowd, and
is a Mecca for rock climbers as well. They call this Wide Crack Country
(no giggles, please), and with over 900 climbing routes with names like
Friday the 13th , Bladerunner and Specterman, you know they mean business.
Beware the razor-sharp Feldspar Crystals in the Precambrian Granite!
