Family fun at Richard Bong
Richard Bong State Recreation Area is named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Wisconsin, native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. Plans for a jet-plane base were abandoned 3 days before concrete was to be poured for the runway. In 1974 the state bought the land and it became the Wisconsin's 1st recreation area. Richard Bong State Recreation Area is located 8 miles southeast of Burlington, Wisconsin, and about 47 miles from Milwaukee, 71 miles from Chicago, and 362 miles from Minneapolis.

The Richard Bong State Recreation Area encompasses over 4,500 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands and woodland. It is openyear-round and has 41.1 miles of trails that are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. That’s lots of room for good, old-fashioned Wisconsin skiing! Sledding and ice fishing are also favorite winter sports.
