Eight thousand skiers pile into little Hayward, Wisconsin for “North
America’s Largest Cross Country Ski Marathon” and subsequent
events. It is a well-attended, hallowed event, rich in historical tradition.
Birkebeiners are historically known in Norway for saving their prince
during the civil war atop birch bark poles, gliding through the ice-sheeted
snow. To commemorate this event, Norwegians held a comparable race in
1932 and the sport has grown and evolved ever since.
Today the “Berkie” is one of the most celebrated cross country
skiing events in the world. Join the celebration of endurance every
February in quaint Hayward, Wisconson.
