Snowy Ahnapee
For more than a century railroad bells and train whistles were heard along what it today a quiet stretch of unpaved country road in the Kewaunee and Door County countryside. The Ahnapee State Trail is a prime example of "rails to trails" conversion, in which the removal of tracks creates a great recreational run. In the spring, summer, and fall hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and horse-drawn carts and wagons all share the trail. In winter this is the perfect place for cross-country skiers to whisk along the trail’s snowy surface. The Ahnapee Trail is among the most scenic locales for Wisconsin skiing.

The Ahnapee State Trail runs almost 30 miles through Casco, Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. The 8 to 10 foot wide trail has a firm surface for hiking, trail bikes and horseback riding, but is best in the winter when the trail is used by both snowmobilers (it interconnects with 95 miles of snowmobile trails in Kewaunee County and 275 miles of trail in Door County) and cross-country skiers.
