Zabriskie Point in Death Valley California rises 5,000
feet above the floor of the floor of the valley, offering visitors a
commanding view of the areas fantastic geography. The point sits at
the edge of the Funeral Mountains, overlooking gullies, hills and a
colorful landscape of pastel-hued rock. Visible in the foreground are
the jagged teeth of the Furnace Creek Formation, and beyond them the
great, flat Death Valley salt pan and the slopes of the Tucki and Panamint
Mountains. Any number of clichéd (and mildly worrisome) biological
metaphors spring to mind with regards to this view: heart-stopping,
jaw-dropping, eye-popping, breath-taking, etcetera. The point is the
Point is certainly worth a look.
Zabriskie Point is accessible by automobile, followed by a short hike
up to the actual overlook. The surrounding hills provide no less spectacular

formation visitors should check out 20 Mule Canyon (named for the mule-pulled
carts heading to and from the Borax mines in at the turn of the century);
it’s only 5 miles away.
