Mount Whitney Permits

Wilderness permits are obligatory on the Mt. Whitney Trail at all time of the year, and all overnight backpackers and day hikers are required to obtain a permit before beginning their hike. A permit isn’t needed to day-hike to Lone Pine Lake (located about 2.5 miles from the trailhead), but any day use visitors who hike further than Lone Pine Lake will enter the Whitney Zone, where a day use permit is necessary.

From May 1 to November 1 a daily quota limits the number of people that are permitted on the trail to 100 day hikers and 60 overnight backpackers. During the quota season, people can apply for a permit by means of entering the Mount Whitney Lottery. Applications are only accepted in February. After the lottery any left over quota spaces may be reserved by contacting the Wilderness Permit Office at least 2 days prior to the trip. Any remaining quota space then becomes available at the Lone Pine InterAgency Visitor Center on a first-come, first-serve basis. In the non-quota season (November 2 to April 30) permits may obtained at the Mt. Whitney Ranger Station or the Lone Pine InterAgency Visitors Center.
