West Virginia’s climate is very diverse. The state has five distinct climate regions, namely the Tidewater, Piedmont, Northern Virginia, Western Mountain, and Southwestern Mountain regions. Several regions enjoy infrequent subzero temperature, but winters in the northern Blue Ridge region often face extremely cold temperatures comparable to those found in Chicago. Annual rainfall totals vary from a mere thirty-three inches in the Shenandoah Valley to over sixty inches in the mountains of southwestern part of the state.
