At over 4,840 feet above sea level, Bald
Knob in the Allegheny Mountains is the 3rd highest point on in West
Virginia, and is only 21 feet shorter than Spruce Knob, the highest
point in the state. Bald Knob is part of Cass Scenic Railroad State
Park. While the summit of Bald Knob can be reached by hiking, most visitors
ride the Cass Scenic Railroad to its terminal just below the mountaintop.
A fire-tower is located there, and there is an observation deck on the
eastern side of the mountain for the Cass Scenic Railroad.
Bald Knob’s elevation gives the mountain a unique, often harsh
climate. The western slopes of the mountain receive a yearly average
of 60 inches of rain and over 180 inches of snow. It has been known
to snow as late as June 7 on Bald Knob, and winter temperatures sometimes
dip to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.
