Washington has two main climate zones. The western part
of the state has a mild, humid climate. A cool, dry climate is found
east of the Cascade Mountain Range. On the Pacific coast the average
annual temperature ranges from 51 degrees F to 40 degrees F. A wet marine
climate dominates western Washington, where frequently overcast skies,
dense fog, and consistent, heavy rainfall are common. Summers are sunnier.
East of the Cascade Range, however, annual precipitation only amounts
to around 6 inches, though precipitation does increase closer to the
Rocky Mountains.
