Herbert West Lake’s Lower Monument Dam.
Herbert G. West Lake is a 10 square mile reservoir that extends over 28 miles up the Snake River northeast of Pasco, Washington. It is formed by the 226 foot-high Lower Monumental Dam, which was built at the head of Lake Sacajawea by Army Corps of Engineers in 1969 for navigation, power generation, flood control, and as a fish and wildlife pond. Today it is also used for recreation, particularly Washington fishing; there are 2 fish ladders in Herbert G. West Lake for passing migratory fish species.

There are more than 8,330 acres of state and federally owned and maintained lands surrounding Lake Herbert G. West. These areas are set aside for public recreational use, wildlife habitat and water-connected industrial purposes. Nearly 1180 acres of lake-adjacent land are encompassed by Washington’s Lyons Ferry State Park. Public boat-launching facilities are accessible at 5 locations along Herbert G. West Lake’s shore line.
