The Eastern Virginia shore at Wreck & Bones
Wreck and Bone Island Natural Area Preserve, located near the southern terminus of the chain of Atlantic coast barrier islands along Virginia’s Eastern Shore, is a pristine wildlife refuge and protected habitat that consists of beach, dune, maritime grassland and shrub-land, salt flat and salt marsh habitats. Additionally, enormous “dunes” made up of ancient shells run alongside large stretches of the beach.

The Wreck and Bone Natural Area Preserve can only be reached via boat. The refuge is open to the public from September the 1st through April 14, just in time for the prime Virginia fishing season. In order to protect the island’s nesting birds he island is closed the rest of the year.

Though hunting, camping, fires and unleashed dogs are not permitted, bird watchers, Virginia wildlife observation enthusiasts and nature photographers are sure to enjoy their visit just as much as the anglers.
