Anglers looking to do some peaceful
Virginia fishing could do much worse than the Clinch River. Game
fish species that have to be artificially stocked into some other
Virginia rivers are native to Clinch River. Species that make
their home in this river include the smallmouth bass, spotted
bass, walleye, and sauger (Clinch River and its tributaries are
the only Virginia waters where sauger can be found). Also present
are largemouth bass, rock bass, redbreast sunfish, longear sunfish,
and bluegill sunfish, as well as musky, black crappie and freshwater
drum. Sizeable catfish come in both the channel and flathead varieties,
and in good numbers.
The Clinch River is fine for boating and provides good scenery.
Most of the river’s length is peaceful enough, but there
area the occasional rough spots, such as ledges, riffles and falls,
and paddlers are encouraged to study their route carefully and
use proper safety procedure.
