The Shenandoah Valley National Park
is easily one of the most beautiful natural places in the United
States. One excellent way to see this amazing park is to take
the 105-mile scenic road called Skyline Drive as it crosses the
spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cliffs, forests, stunning vistas
and occasionally wildlife are visible from the comfort of ones
car. There are also 500 miles of hiking trails accessible from
Skyline Drive, and various scenic stopping points.
Guests should stop and stock up at the friendly Visitors Center
in the town of Front Royal. From there they can choose which outdoor
adventure they wish to experience in Shenandoah Valley National
Park. The options range from trout fishing to hang gliding, and
there’s always something to do.
Campers can choose from between 4 NPS campgrounds, or get backcountry
camping permits for free. Horseback riding is popular in the Shenandoah
Valley and there are 500 miles of trails to ride. Skyline Stables
hires horses and guides. Cyclists can ride on public roads only,
but given the quality of Shenandoah’s scenic paved roadways,
that’s no hardship. Birding is top-notch in the park, and
the National Audubon Society Annual Christmas Bird Count only
costs $5 per person, and allows birders to help count and observe
the regions birds within a 15-mile diameter.
