Trail Description:

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a public footpath across over 2,000 miles of Appalachian Mountain ridgelines from Maine to Georgia. A beautiful section of this trail is located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Maintenance of the trail within the NRA is a partnership involving the Forest Service and the Appalachian Trail Conference.

Hiking the The Appalachian Trail - GW-Jefferson:

The Appalachian Trail Conference maintains the trail within the NRA through three clubs: the Tennessee Eastman Appalachian Trail Club, Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail Club and PATH (Piedmont Appalachian Trail Hikers). Each club maintains a web site that provide information about their respective sections of the trail.

The Appalachian Trail Conference web site also provides useful information about the trail. The federal partner organization for the Appalachian Trail is the National Park Service, which administers the AT as a National Scenic Trail. Information is available from the NPS web site.

The Appalachian Trail Conference and the Forest Service co-sponsor a trail crew, known as the Konnarock Crew. This crew is based in the NRA, but does maintenance work on the AT in a much larger area.

Several campgrounds in the NRA are within several miles of the AT. Consult the campgrounds page, especially for Grindstone, Beartree (entrance is near AT, but campground is several miles from entrance), Hurricane. The family campground in Grayson Highlands Virginia State Park is also within several miles of the AT.
