Grand Caverns is the oldest show cave in the USA, and has been open for the public continually for nearly 200 years. During the American Civil War the cave was visited by both Confederate and Union soldiers. The visitors left their names on the walls of the cave, and more than 230 signatures can be identified those of civil war soldiers.

The cave is famous for its numerous formations, including the 250 rare “shields”. The biggest chamber in this cave is Cathedral Hall; at 85m long and 21m high it is one of the largest rooms of any cavern in the Eastern US. Around Grand Cavern are several smaller caves that are also open to the public. They may be visited in groups by appointment.
