From afar the Escalante Mountains look more like a plateau than a mountain range. The Table Cliffs make up the southernmost reach of the mountain range and they comprise an impressive escarpment which is visible for miles. The cliffs themselves are formed of the multi-colored Clarion Formation, which also forms the beautiful landscapes of Bryce and Cedar Breaks National Parks. Visiting the Escalante Mountains is sure to get one off the beaten tourist track and into some beautiful country. One means to reach the Escalante Mountains is via Escalante Canyon from Widstoe. Local signs don’t clearly mark this, but you can take the same road that says Barney Top. The road to the top of the Escalante Mountains raises over 4000 feet and while it’s a dirt road it is generally of good quality and maintained except when storms or winter weather make it impassible. Once at the top of the Escalante Mountains the road heads north to Griffin Top through green meadows and islands of pine forests. Several maintained trailheads are accessible from the road and hikers have the choice of visiting any of several mountain lakes. |
