Circle Cliffs

The Circle Cliffs are located in southwestern Utah just west of the southern end of Capitol Reef National Park and just south of Boulder Mountain. While the cliffs themselves are not considered a mountain range they are an imposing topographic feature. The Anticline which is responsible for the topographic expression of the Circle Cliffs is thought to be the result of geologic compression which occurred during the Laramide Orogeny. Weathering since then has eroded the fold and exposed the cliffs which are formed from the Wingate Sandstone. The layer beneath the Wingate is the multicolored slope forming Chinle formation and it is here that petrified wood is commonly found. The Burr Trail cuts through the Circle Cliffs and connects Utah’s Highway 12 with the Notom Road. Opportunities for primitive camping can be found along the Burr Trail and Deer Creek Campground just outside of Boulder is an excellent place to spend the night.
