| Boulder Mountain is a large plateau in south central Utah. Much of the plateau is over 11,000 feet in elevation and the flat top of the plateau is covered by rolling pine forests, aspen and alpine lakes. The fir forests and alpine lakes of Boulder Mountain are in sharp contrast to the hot dry surrounding deserts which make up the surrounding Capitol Reef NP and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Highway 12 traverses Boulder Mountain between Torrey, Utah and Boulder Utah for 36 miles. This highway is the only paved road to cross the mountain and many of the other routes are primitive 4wd roads. Several established hiking trails are found leading to the top of Boulder Mountain and to the surrounding lakes some of which are excellent for fishing, but the trail to Chokecherry point actually follows a 4WD road that is seldom used. The road gains over 2000 feet between the highway and the point but is fairly easy hiking and the high elevation keeps temperatures cool even on hot summer days. Once at the top of Chokecherry point one has great views towards the east of Capitol Reef, the San Rafel Swell, The Henry Mountains and in a clear day even the La Sal are visible. |
