The Abajo Mountains, a.k.a. the “Blues”,
can be found just west of Monticello in southeastern Utah. Theses scenic
Utah mountains are a somewhat smallish range that tops out at a little
over 11,360 feet at Abajo Peak.
The Abajos are forested with aspen and fir. As such they make a welcome
contrast to the Utah desert climate of the surrounding lowlands.
There are numerous ways to enjoy the scenery of the Abajo Mountains,
and without having to fight the crowds, as the Abajos are not especially
well known. A pair of interesting scenic drives through the range is
good for visitors on a tight schedule, especially the one to the top
of Abajo Peak. The network of trails running through the Abajo range
is excellent for summer Utah hiking, and in the winter cross-country
skiing and snowmobiling opportunities present themselves. Nearby Elk
Ridge also features trails with beautiful alpine vistas.
