The Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area in Utah is famous for its National Park fishing, especially for terrific trophy trout. Because its surface water is cool and clear even during the worst heat of summer the paradoxically named Lake Flaming Gorge is perfect for producing enormous trout: 50-pound+ Mackinaw lake trout (the record was 51 lb 8 oz), 30-pound+ German brown trout and rainbow trout tipping the scales at more than 25 pounds. Flaming Gorge is also home to numerous cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon, smallmouth bass and channel catfish. Simply put, this is Utah fishing at its best.
The Green River below the dam is finest blue ribbon trout streams in the country. The roaring whitewater and stunning canyon scenery only add to the appeal of this excellent spot.
Flaming Gorge Lake is open for fishing year-round. Ice fishing is a popular pastime in the winter (less so during summer).
