The Maze District in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park is a fascinating National Park attraction that is separated from the rest of the park by the Green River and Colorado River. It takes its name from the fact that from the plateaus above it resembles a labyrinth. Rainwater making its way to the Colorado River over millions of years has eroded 5 major canyons and dozens of smaller side canyons.
Though the Maze is one of the most rugged and remote desert areas in the United States it actually only occupies a small part the Canyonlands Maze District, about 30 square miles. Yet that relatively small area is packed with some of the most interesting things to do in Utah.
A scenic Utah hiking trail leads to the upper plateaus, with views of the canyons below, and passes by the Archaic Indian Harvest Scene pictograph rock art panel. Of course the greatest pleasure is exploring a few side canyons before returning to the main trailhead.
