When they ask “are we there yet”, they aren’t going to like what they hear. Chances are, neither are you. But every family trip doesn’t have to end in rancor and hair pulling (self-inflicted or otherwise). By preparing for a road trip with you’re kids in advance and using a few simple tips parents can lower the stress level for everyone.
  • Clean the Car: it won’t stay that way, but everyone will be comfortable to start.
  • Pack with Plastic: zip-up plastic bags keep everything neat and organized.
  • Seatbelts & Car-seats: uncomfortable, yes, but it’s the law (and it’s smart).
  • Avoid the Scenic Route: kids will be bored with this longer, windier version of the regular route, which they’re probably too short to see anyway.
  • Snacks: buy water, celery, carrots and peanut butter at the grocery store; it’s healthier and cheaper and there’s no caffeine.
  • Stop & Smell…Whatever: never mind your itinerary, speedy; kids need more frequent breaks to stretch, burn off nervous energy and go to the bathroom.
  • Car Games for Kids: I-Spy, Count the Out-Of-State Plates, travel-sized board games or any kid travel games are essential for long trips, but avoid anything with numerous small pieces (Risk, for example, is inadvisable).
  • Be Prepared for the Sick: kids get carsickness worse than adults; try peppermint, sea-bands, Dramamine (take 1 hour before the trip), or whatever works, and don’t forget the bucket.
