The look-out tower atop Clingmans Dome
At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest mountain in Tennessee, and the 2nd highest point east of the Mississippi. Only North Carolina's 6,684-foot Mt. Mitchell is higher.

Clingmans Dome is a popular destination for those visiting the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Countless visitors have hiked up the paved trail to the 54-foot observation tower at the summit. The Appalachian Trail crosses Clingmans Dome, reaching the highest point of the entire path.

The view from Clingmans Dome on a clear, pollution-free day allows visitors to see over 100 miles into 7 states. Unfortunately air pollution often limits the view to a little over 20 miles. Even on a bad day the view are spectacular, though, and it remains a perfect place to watch sunrises and sunsets.

The natural conditions on Clingmans Dome's summit are perfect for coniferous rainforest. Sadly pests, disease, and industrial pollution threaten this unique spruce-fir forest.
