Trail Description:

As it winds its way along the mountainside to Iron Gap, this trail takes riders into the beautiful Gee Creek Wilderness and gives them glimpses of pristine natural beauty. Vistas of the Hiwassee River Gorge and surrounding mountains add to the scenic setting. Horseback riding enthusiasts will find this moderate-to-difficult trail, which also ties in with the Starr Mountain Horse Trail Complex, an exciting challenge.

Hiking the Chestnut Mountain Horse Trail No. 104:

Camp, picnic, and swim at Gee Creek State Campground or Quinn Springs Campground. For some hiking, try Gee Creek Trail, Gee Creek watchable wildlife trail, Starr Mountain or Lowry Falls trail, which is noted for its beautiful waterfalls. Off-road enthusiasts should try the Chestnut Mountain 4WD trail.

Trail Information: Travel time about 3 hours. Trail is marked with white rectangles, except in the Gee Creek Wilderness, where care must be taken to stay on the proper trail.

Site Amenities: Parking and dispersed camping are available at Lost Corral.

Requirements: Trail is designated for horseback riders. However, hikers may use the trail at their discretion.

Trailhead Directions:

From the Ocoee/Hiwassee Ranger Station, travel west on Hwy. 64 for __miles to Hwy. 314. Travel on 314 till it ends at Hwy 411. Turn right and travel north on 411 about 7 miles Spring Creek Road (entrance to Gee Creek Campground). Turn right and travel 1 mile to Lost Corral sign, turn left, cross the railroad tracks and bear to the right. Parking is available at Lost Corral.
