Entrance to Custer State Park
With its prairie grasslands, clear still lakes and rolling, pine-covered hills, Custer State Park is one of the South Dakota’s very finest. 114-square miles of land mean there’s plenty of room for the park’s 1,500 buffalo to roam along with elk, deer, sheep, goats, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, various species of bird and Custer State Park’s famous “begging burros” (semi tame donkeys that are always eager for a hand-out). Outdoor adventurers will find plenty to keep them occupied. There are ample opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, climbing, hiking and camping.

The Peter Norbeck Visitors Center 15 miles east of Custer State Park features exhibits and activities. Every October all of the park’s bison are rounded up. In November 500 are auctioned off for anywhere from $500 to $1,100 apiece.
