Waubay Lake is located 30-minutes from
Webster, South Dakota. It is one of around 15 lakes in the area, but
it is by far the most famous. Waubay has more than quadrupled its size
in the past 10 years by swallowing up many small lakes and combining
with lakes like Rush, Minnewasta, and Blue Dog. It is now part of a
gigantic fishery almost 9 miles long and approximately 5 miles wide
at its greatest points. Waubay has a maximum depth of 35 feet at present.
Best of all, it's full of walleyes, perch, and pike.
Anglers in the Mt. Rushmore State agree that June is the best time of
the year for walleye fishing in South Dakota. When the weather's at
its best Waubay's walleyes get pretty darned big. Trophy fish weighing
in at over 8 pounds get pulled from the lake about once a month. Some
walleyes over 10 pounds have even been registered. Most of these giants
have been released back into the lake.
