A windy day at Big Stone Lake.
South Dakota’s Big Stone Lake is a narrow freshwater reservoir on the border of western Minnesota and northeastern South Dakota. Big Stone Lake covers over 12,600 surface acres, is 26 miles long and averages roughly 1 mile wide. At an elevation of 965 feet it is the lowest point in South Dakota. Big Stone Lake is fed by the Little Minnesota River on the north end, and is also the source of the Minnesota River, which flows 332 miles before coverging with the Mississippi River.

There are 2 state parks on Big Stone Lake: Big Stone Lake State Park in Minnesota and Hartford Beach State Park in South Dakota. These parks offer picnic areas, boat launches, hiking trails and campsites.

Anglers are attracted to the lake thanks to the excellent South Dakota fishing; the lake is stocked every other year with 7,000,000 walleye fry. Game fish found here include northern pike, bluegills and over 30 other species. 12 public access points are available for fishing use.
