As far as most tourist are concerned Rapid City is primarily a gateway to the many wonderful out-door adventures awaiting them in the marvelous Black Hills of South Dakota. While some of the kitschy shops and attractions in Rapid City seem to reinforce that assumption, the city does have more to offer than souvenirs and pit stops.

The Journey Museum is a pleasant and educational way to spend a rainy afternoon, and features a broad, if not terribly deep, view of the Black Hills long and storied history. Golfers are in for a real treat if they get a tee-time at the magnificent Black Hills Elk Lodge Golf Course, featuring a first class course surrounded by breath-taking views of the natural world. The astounding Stavkirke Chapel, also known as “The Chapel in the Hills” is a replica of an 850-year-old Burgund Norwegian Church, faithful right down to the amazing and intricate wood carvings found inside and out. Mountain Bikers will find plenty of great trails in and around Rapid City, including a 13.5-mile ride along Rapid Creek and a Highway trail from Rapid City to Mt. Rushmore.

Visitors who want to avoid the many familiar chain hotels/ motels in Rapid City may like the Lamplighter Inn or the Big Sky Motel. The Rapid City Regional Airport has shuttles to Rapid City for $12 or to Deadwood for $60. The orange Rapid Taxis in Rapid City charge $1.60 per mile.
