The owners of Stage Barn Crystal Cave claim it is the largest private cave system in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The cave is located in Stage Barn Canyon; both were named after a stagecoach barn. The locals also call the canyon Botany Canyon due to the wealth of flora and fauna found there. Native Americans have long revered the canyon and gathered herbs for medicinal and spiritual uses here.
The cave tour is more or less level, and not very strenuous, but the cave entrance is located below the limestone cliffs, and reaching it requires a steep walk that rewards hikers with spectacular views. The tour features calcite crystals of exceptional in color and great speleothems in the form of helectites and boxwork. |
