Wild Santee Refuge
The Santee National Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to providing a haven for migratory waterfowl and native South Carolina Wildlife alike. Many travelers take the opportunity to visit the refuge’s 15,000+ acres along Lake Marion and hike or canoe through the woodlands, fields, ponds and marshes that comprise its 4 units. Observing the many creatures that visit or make their home there is a real treat, especially for bird watchers. Among the refuge’s feathered inhabitants are hawks, songbirds, ducks, and species like the endangered Bald Eagle. Also present are bobcats, raccoons, white-tailed deer and American alligator.

Besides wildlife observation, popular activities in the Santee Wildlife Refuge include hiking and nature photography. In certain units of the refuge boating, fishing and hunting is allowed with the proper permits and licenses.

The Santee Visitor Center is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Visitor Center has several displays describing the refuge’s wildlife and habitats.
