South Carolina’s Thurmond Lake is
a man-made lake created by Thurmond Dam on the Savannah River, 22 miles
above Augusta Georgia. With more than 71,000 acres of water, a maximum
depth of 180 feet (below the Thurmond Dam) and a shoreline of nearly
1200 miles, Thurmond Lake is one of the largest lakes in the state.
It is also one of the most popular public of the South Carolina lakes,
and serves as an important source of local recreation, water supply,
water quality, fish and wildlife management and flood control. Nearly
80,000 acres of public land surrounds this superlative South Carolina
lake.
Thurmond Lake features public parks, marinas, and South Carolina campgrounds.
Guests to Thurmond Lake will find plenty of pleasant places to picnic
and enjoy the scenery. Visitors can take part in any number of outdoor
activities here as well, including boating, swimming and good old South
Carolina fishing.
