At 110,000 acres South Carolina’s
Lake Marion, located in the lowlands of South Carolina north of Charleston,
is the largest lake in the state. Marion and its sister lake, Lake Moultrie,
are connected by the Diversion Canal. Santee State Park, with all its
outdoor adventure opportunities, is located nearby.
The Santee Cooper utility owns and operates the lakes for power production,
but top-notch South Carolina fishing is what Lake Marion is known for.
Record-setting largemouth bass and enormous catfish are caught in the
canal. It’s the rare angler that goes away from Lake Marion disappointed.
With its cypress trees and swampy areas, lake Marion has a different
atmosphere from upstate South Carolina lakes. Nevertheless, there are
vast expanses of open water in Lake Marion as well, and waves have been
known to get extremely high on windy days. Lake Marion features numerous
campgrounds, boat ramps, restaurants, and places for lodging.
