The weather of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range ranges
widely, changing from that of a hot desert climate not unlike the Sahara
at its eastern base to an artic-alpine climate on the higher peaks.
The vast majority of the Sierra Nevada, however, can be categorized
as a Mediterranean climate or a low-temperature, micro thermal climates.
Mediterranean climates characterized by warm, hot dry summers and cold,
wet winters rule the Sierra below 6000 feet or so. Micro thermal climates
are the norm in the high Sierra, and are defined by having an average
temperature below 27°F in the coldest months of the year. These
are also the areas that receive greatest snowfall in the Sierra.
