Though their name in Spanish means simply “the snowy range”
no less an authority on the subject than naturalist John Muir thought
a better, more apt name would be the Range of Light. Certainly the incomparable
peaks of Sierra Nevada have been a beacon to many an explorer since
humans first laid eyes on them thousands of years ago. And while their
sun-lit iridescence is due to the unusually light-colored granite of
the range’s many towering faces (the result of countless years
of being polished by glaciers) their transcendent natural beauty has
a light all its own.
The Sierra Nevada stretch 400 miles north to south between California’s
central valley in the west and Arizona’s Great Basin in the east.
They are home to many of the most unique and beautiful landscapes in
America. Within the Sierra Nevada are awesome glacially scoured canyons
like Kings Canyon and the Hetch Hetchy Valley, peaks such as Mt. Whitney*
(the highest point in the contiguous United States), groves of Giant
Sequoia, the earth’s largest living thing, and national parks
like the astounding Yosemite. Truly visitors could spend a lifetime
in this divine place and only see a fraction of its wonders.
