Little Lakes Valley in Rock Creek Canyon

The Mosquito Flat trailhead in Rock Creek Canyon has an elevation of more than 10,000 feet, and is the trailhead for 1 of the most popular hikes in the Eastern Sierra, the Little Lakes Valley Trail. Little Lakes Valley is 2nd only to Mt. Whitney in terms of fame and the number of hikers who come to hike it. While it’s a rather easy trail, it winds past visually stunning alpine lakes, meadows, and streams.

The spectacular vistas aren’t the only attraction here. The canyon’s lakes are teaming with a wide variety of trout, including numerous small Brook Trout and large Brown Trout.

Hikers who want to mix it up a bit can hit the Mono Pass which branches off from the Little Lakes Valley trail about a quarter of a mile from the Mosquito Flat trailhead. This alternate path takes hikers to some popular areas on the Sierra's west side, such as the Mono Creek Recesses and the world famous John Muir Trail. Little Lakes Valley hikers should be warned, however, that taking the Mono Pass is much more difficult than hiking Little Lakes Valley.
