The bucolic, yet rugged little city of Truckee is located in the Sierra Nevada of California, just west of the Nevada state line. Times are changing in Truckee, and its current population of just over 14,000 may potentially to swell to a staggering 40,000 people in under 10 years due to increased development of previously forested lands in areas like the Martis Valley and the CA-267 corridor. The majority of this throng would surely be tourists vacationing in the beautiful Sierra Nevada most Truckee oppose the plan because of the possible impact upon an already beleaguered environment.

History buffs won’t want to pass up Truckee’s historic jail museum. This rare 19th century Western jailhouse is one of the few remaining original buildings in Truckee. The old Bastille was in continuously use from 1875 through May of 1964, and housed some of the most notorious outlaws in American history, like “Babyface” Nelson and “Machinegun” Kelly.

Donner Lake is located within the town limits of Truckee. Many summer visitors come here to rent a cabin and enjoy the beautiful Truckee California weather. The fishing there is decent and there are numerous water sports to enjoy. Historic Donner Pass is just over the summit of the Sierra Nevada west of Truckee.
