Formerly the ranch of local socialite
Samuel Colt, the decision to open this land to the public was
largely his idea. A sign at the gates still reads “Private
Property, Public Welcome.”
Now a state owned and preserved site, the remnants of this initial
invitation are still evident in the alluring sprawl of nearby
fields. Recent efforts have been made to connect the park with
cities along Narragansett Bay, including Providence and Bristol.
New hiking and biking paths have been proposed and built to do
so.
The park is primarily a day visit, perfect for picnics, fishing
or a stop by the beautifully simple open-air chapel. Come relax
by the bay or take part in conservation programs to ensure progress
doesn’t mess with this pristine setting.
