Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge

Once a Naval Landing Field, this site has been reclaimed by the nature that surrounds it. Remnants of concrete strips and stations line the flat portions, but natural beauty is reestablishing itself here.

Besides the overgrown structures, there are thickly forested marshes and shorelines that are prime for exploration. For views of rare birds and other wildlife, simply set out on one of the site’s trails or seek help from anyone in the visitors center.

Although this sanctuary is not completely restored, the progress is definitely evident. With concerned humans prodding the process along, Ninigret will soon retain the awe-inspiring habitats it once knew.
