The Youghiogheny (or the Yough to those who know) is an extremely popular Pennsylvania river system. Much of the more challenging portions of this long river take place in Maryland, but the Pennsylvanian stretch has a good deal of kayak rapids, fast and slow. The first section is a simple trip, perfect for beginners and kids. The crags along the river walls will likely give first timers a rush of anticipation for quicker flowing waters. The last stretch is a swirling, intense portion, combining class three and four rapids. This river provides a good opportunity to work your way up, if you’re just learning.

Of course, you should evade the middle portion at all costs. There are huge falls, open only during a yearly, organized kayak race.
