Pennsylvania lies within the humid continental zone, but its climate
varies according to region and elevation. The regions with the warmest
temperatures are the southwest Ohio valley and the Monongahela River
valley in the southeast part of the state. The moderating effect of
the lake prevents early spring and late autumn frosts along the he region
bordering Lake Erie. Therefore the former two areas have hot summers,
while the Erie area is milder. The higher elevations in rest of the
state have colder winters and cooler summers.
