Pennsylvania stretch of the nation’s first national scenic trail
cuts through the southeastern portion of the state and moves toward
Maryland. It is designated specifically for short-term hikers and backpackers,
so as not to disturb the land.
The portion that starts at the Delaware Water Gap and crosses the Cumberland
Valley before exiting the state is infamous for being one of the rockiest
and most challenging fragments in trail’s length. Pennsylvania’s
section is full of rugged ridges and gaps as well as steep inclines.
If this all seems completely daunting to you, remember that the trip
is well worth the challenge.
During the course of the trail, you are enveloped in nature, from mountain
streams to tree-canopied trails and bustling Appalachian wildlife.
