The Susquehannock Indians, who lived and hunted in this area of Pennsylvania until the 1670’s, probably used Indian Echo Caverns for shelter. Archeologists believe that they used the caverns as a refuge during inclement weather, taking advantage of the constant temperature. Evidence suggests that they only used the mouth of the cave where Swatara creek leaves the cave.
As Indian Echo Caverns has its own train station, it is possible to combine a ride on the Middletown &, Hummelstown Railroad, which offers scenic train rides on coaches from the 1920’s, with a visit to Indian Echo Caverns. The ride includes a trip to Horse Thief Cave, where horse thieves hid their recently stolen animals.
