River rafting in Hells CanyonThe Snake River in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area provides some of the best National Park rafting opportunities in the United States, all in the deepest in North America. Hells Canyon is home to the famed Class IV rapids like "Wild Sheep" and "Granite Creek", just to name a few. The Snake River produces high volume flows with warm water that is famous for big wave rapids, as well as excellent swimming, and Oregon fishing opportunities.

The toughest section of the Snake River in the Hells Canyon lies between the put-in below Hells Canyon Dam and Pittsburg Landing. From there to Hells Gate State Park there are 73 miles strewn with Class III rapids. Permits are required for any boating above Heller Bar, 30 river miles above Lewiston. Visitors rafting the Snake River can also explore aboriginal sites that have pictographs, petroglyphs, rock shelters and house pits. Hells Canyon's boasts more than 7,800 years of human habitation.
