Elk Rock Island from above
Elk Rock Island is located in Portland, Oregon. The island was once part of an ancient volcano that last erupted roughly 40 million years ago. The enormous, saw-toothed basalt boulders found throughout the island were formed by these long-ago lava flows, and may be the oldest exposed rock in the entire Portland area.

Portland area businessman Peter Kerr acquired the property in 1910 from the Rock Island Club (which operated a dance hall on the island) and gave the island to the city of Portland in 1940 on the condition that it would be preserved in its natural state.

Today Rock Island is one of the most popular wild Portland parks. Visitors to Elk Rock Island can experience the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in a pristine natural setting.
