Lava River Cave

Oregon Home | Oregon Sitemap
Oregon’s Lava River Cave a tall lava tube of nearly constant diameter, with a floor that has some truly interesting flow features and lavacicles on the walls that were formed when the lava was molten. The cave runs beneath U.S. Hwy 97, where the roof of the cave is 15m thick.

This Oregon cave is not a show cave, there are no developed paths and no light. Tours are self-guided. The cave is entered through the collapsed park of the ceiling, t a rather unassuming hole in the ground. The 1st stop on the tour is a large, cool chamber where stalactites and stalagmites of ice, formed during winter persist until the warmer days of June. Beyond that “room” the main passage is an easy walk, and shows walls covered with a shiny and glazed form of lava. These speleothems are volcanic stalactites called lavacicles.
