Black Mesa State Park and Nature Preserve is located near Kenton
in the Oklahoma panhandle. Visitors to this rugged yet beautiful
park can go climbing on nearby Black Mesa, follow the fossilized
footprints of dinosaurs, enjoy a hike on the petrified forest
trail, or appease their urge to angle by doing a bit of Oklahoma
fishing in Lake Carl Etling, Black Mesa State Park is, simply
put, one big opportunity for outdoor adventure.
Black Mesa State Park takes its name from the layer of black lava
rock that coated the mesa about 30 million years ago. The Nature
Preserve is located 15 miles from the state park and is the location
of Oklahoma's highest elevation: 4,973 feet above sea level. Black
Mesa State Park also offers access Lake Carl Etling and offers
Oklahoma campsites (both primitive and RV), picnic facilities,
boat ramps and a mooring buoy, a playground, restrooms with showers
and a group camping area.
