For a smaller state park, Nelson
Ledges offers some serious hiking. Natural attractions and history
abound in this region, which has been inhabited by a range of
different peoples throughout the centuries.
Nelson-Kennedy is particularly stunning in spring and summer,
when various wildflowers are in bloom. The limestone cliff sides
provide a contrasting background with their varying shaped, from
jagged to smooth.
Many rare trees provide a nice canopy over most of the park. Various
ledges and rock formations abound as well, challenging hikers
to master the land. There are no campsites here, since the region
and its wildlife are so carefully protected. For a good night’s
sleep you can splurge on a cabin or lodge at nearby Punderson
State Park, a generally more tourist-friendly destination, or
you can rough it at any of their standard campsites.
