Trail Description:

Welcome to the Wayne National Forest and to the Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System. The horse trails wind through some of the most striking landscapes in Ohio. They will lead you through a variety of vegetation where many species of wildlife live. You will see open fields, brushland, mature forest, and young forests. Along the way, you will notice man's influence and land management activities.

Hiking the Vesuvius Horse Trail:

Routes include sections of easy as well as difficult trails. Please use caution on steep slopes.

The trailheads for the Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail system are located off State Route 93.

Length of Trail: over 10 miles

Travel Information
Trailhead Directions:

Sand Hill and Paddle Creek: Take State Route 93 north out of Ironton for approximately 7 miles. Turn right at the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area sign and travel approximately 3 miles on County Road 29 to the Sand Hill Trailhead. Township Road 245 dead ends at the Paddle Creek Trailhead.

Johns Creek: Take State Route 93 north out of Ironton for approximately 8 miles. Turn right at the Johns Creek Trailhead sign and travel approximately 5 miles on County Road 4 to the Johns Creek Trailhead.
