This manmade, nature assisted waterway opened up the door for settlement
in Ohio. Construction began in 1825 and, when completed, the towpath
opened up a trade route from what is now Cleveland all the way down
to the Ohio River.
Many historic sites line the formerly thriving path. Paper Mills, ponds,
dams, and old bridges are all significant stopping points along the
way. Most of the stretch is strictly for hiking, biking and horseback
riding, in other words, constant motion. If you want to extend your
trip, try the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
